Water Conservation in California

Hey everyone! My group and I are currently working on water conservation due to the severity of the California Drought. We are primarily focusing on promoting water conservation at our high school, Terra Linda High School. We have distributed surveys and put up posters. We have planned to create a powerpoint to educate the high school on ways the conserve water, yet there is no sure way to make them conserve water. They are fully aware of ways to conserve water and the seriousness of the drought, so not knowing is not an excuse. Is there any suggestion you people have to make people conserve water?

This problem is huge and there's no simple way to fix it immediately. The average rent for a two bedroom apartment is $3,000. Increased rent has been caused by high-income jobs taking over San Francisco. The problem is that there is not enough room in these homeless shelters to fit the over 4000 plus homeless people here in california. Our proposed solution is to provide funding to the non profit organizations that run the organizations by asking the state government to provide tax money to those organizations. Any ideas or help with this would be greatly appreciated thank you for your help.

The traffic on the overpass

In the morning there is a lot of traffic on Ashland, specifically under the overpass. The traffic causes problems for bicyclist, walkers, and drivers. Bicyclist have to watch out for cars that would try and skip the traffic by going on the striped lane. Both the driver and bicyclist get frustrated about who has the right to go on that lane. The same thing goes for drivers and walkers. When students are walking on the crosswalk that is on the right hand side of the school, they have to worry about cars that make unexpected right hand turns. Our proposal is to add two lanes to Ashland, a right turn lane and a bike lane to help speed up traffic. Do you have problems of the traffic on Ashland, either as a walker, biker, or driver. Any suggestions?

For example, here in South Central the most popular places are fast foods restaurants compared to Rancho Cucamanga, having more fancy restaurants then fast food. They also have a health store even nutritional stores. How can we live knowing we and our community is putting us down?

The problem I would like to work on is the issue of people not having knowledge of what they can do with their waste. My idea will also involve power & water conservation.Los Angeles is the city that recycles the most . Los Angeles beat New York and Chicago. People around this community already know how to recycle therefore, I want to bring this idea of having workshops that will provide students with ideas on how their waste can be recycled and reused . My goal is not to solve this problem because it can't be solved permanently , waste will always maintain it's existence but , my goal is to leave this community with a positive mindset on how they can improve their lives and the lives of others.

A problem that we've been having at our school and that we are trying to address. Is that many locations at or school for lunch have been closed down, which makes the lunch lines waiting time longer. so sometimes by the time you even get your food five minutes after and the lunch bell rings for class to begin. so that gives you five minutes to finish you like and five to go get your things for class. Also, sometimes if you wait until the end to not have to wait in the long lunch lines the food runs out, and another thing is that our large variety that our school once offered has been cut down significantly to a very small amount of variety.

At Arroyo High School, there are problems of crime such as vandalism and theft. There have been multiple cases of vandalism around the school which has a negative effect on the school’s appearance. Painting over the vandalism is costly and takes time away from doing something else. In the last year, there was approximately 5 cases of theft in the student designated parking lot. To promote a safer school environment, a solution to decrease and prevent crime could be the use of security cameras on campus. There are already a few cameras present on campus, but there are simply there for show and are not being used. The district’s policy states that they are not responsible for student’s possessions and anything caught on camera (if cameras are in use) may be use it a crime occurs. Students should be able to attend school feeling safe and not worried that their items may be stolen. Our goal is to change and enforce the district’s policy. The new policy would take the students’ belongings into consideration. The school will turn on and use the current cameras on campus in addition to expanding security cameras into the student parking lot as well.

Enforce No Drop-offs on Red Sidewalk

IQ

There are many parents that either pick-up or drop-off their kids inside the school’s student parking lot, rather than using the “loop,” which is designed for the sole purpose to pick-up and drop-off. It’s causing congestion inside the parking lot and poses a fire hazard because they are parking next to a red fire-lane sidewalk.

The congestion will result in traffic and some student who try to park have complained that they have been tardy to class because of this. Another problem is that in the case of a fire or some other type of emergency, the fire-trucks, ambulances, and police cars will have a hard time trying to park their vehicle because parents’ cars get in the way.

The vehicle code12.64.225 Parking Against Red Curb states: a person shall not stop, park , or leave their vehicle adjacent to a curb that is designated by a red paint. We want to enforce this policy more to let parents know that what they are doing is illegal and hazardous.

We want to work on this to prevent accidents and prevent complications to the emergency services. Surveys that we’ve created were given to students that use that parking lot, and all of them agreed that it indeed does cause a problem for them when they try to park and or leave. Also, students that are dropped-off by the red zone were asked if they knew their parents were parking next to a sidewalk painted in red. Most of them responded that they had no idea and that they didn’t notice the red paint. Our buy-in from this problem is that students that park in that parking lot, which includes me and other students with a permit with a a permit to drive, will not have to go through the congestion that is currently happening, and the emergency services will not have to struggle to find an area to park and quickly respond to an emergency.

We will contact our school’s sheriff and discuss the problem. We are going to have the sheriff park his vehicle by the area where the congestion is happening, for a few days to keep the parents from parking there. We are also thinking of making the district have create a sign to emphasize to the parents that what they are doing is illegal and possibly receive a fine for doing so.

The purpose of our CAP project is to create a way for students in high school to find careers that they want to pursue.  The problem is that too many people entering college don't know what they want to major in and end up staying in college longer, or chaining their majors many times.  This wastes money and time that students could be entering the work force.  We want to provide students with career choice opportunities, so that they will be prepared for life after high school.

An issue that my group has been working on are the school restrooms at San Lorenzo Highschool. We want to improve our school restrooms to help make them eco friendly. We believe that they are very run down and need to be modified, and believe that a lot of water is being wasted with overly using water and paper towels are being tooken advantage of with the use of too many. Our current restrooms also waste a lot of resources like water and paper towels and we would like to make them more eco friendly with replacing paper towel dispensers replaced with automatic hand dryers and getting our water faucets to be automatic to save water. This will help make our school look and feel more eco friendly and help enable a healthier look. Does anyone else feel the same about their school restrooms?

Competitive Teacher Wages

CL

The problem is that the San Lorenzo Unified School District (SLZUSD) has one of the lowest teachers'  wages and is one of the least competitive districts out of all the school districts in Alameda County. Our school, Arroyo High School, had eight unfilled positions in the beginning of the year because teachers didn't want to come, proving that we're not competitive with other schools and districts. Our goal is to raise teachers' wages to make our district competitive and to also spread awareness of this injustice. If we raise teachers' wages to a competitive salary, more teachers will want to come work at our district and current teachers won't want to leave as well. Our district will also be able to hire better qualified teachers with higher wages. This is beneficial not only to teachers, but also to students because if more teachers are hired due to higher wages, class sizes will be reduced and students will be able to get more one-to-one interactions with their teacher. Teachers will also feel more satisfied and enthusiastic to work, leading to a more positive learning environment. Help spread awareness of this injustice! Contact the school board and voice your opinion. Feedback is appreciated :)

The quality of our school restrooms is unacceptable. First, they are never supplied adequately (with toilet seat covers, toilet paper, feminine products, etc.). Furthermore, the hygiene is atrocious, with paper towels overflowing the garbage cans, urine on the floors, and used toilet paper sitting un-flushed in the toilets. In addition, several aspects of our restrooms are not up to par; for example, we have door stalls that don't lock, toilets that don't flush, and sink faucets that don't work.

Please help us work toward our goal of improving the general quality of our school restrooms; any advice or feedback in regards to what we can do to solve this issue would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

Diffrent start time at school

Its very hard to wake up in the morning and get ready for school on time, on top of that you must stay up and remain focused in school for about 6 hours . High school students in the San Lorenzo District need more time in the morning to get ready and prepare for school and actually "wake up" . The question is , Why not a different start time at school? maybe about an hour difference.? Don't you think that would benefit most of us?

Sexual assault in military

Sexual assault is a great problem in the military, men and women are getting assaulted and the ones who do it get away with it! There is a big problem in the military's justice system. What is happening to the victims is they can not go and tell on the ones who have assaulted them because if they do they might get kicked out of the military, get "bullied" by others of higher rank, and nothing happens to the one who has assaulted due to there rank.

In San Lorenzo High school, we deal with dirty, unsanitary, uncomfortable restrooms. Especially for women, we would like to achieve having eco-friendly modern restrooms. In order to do so we need to depend less on paper towels, conserve water, and depend more on solar energy that we have access to.

In the communities of San Leandro and San Lorenzo the abuse of illegal drugs and alcohol in minors is very high, especially for Juniors and Seniors in high school. This information has to be told to the parents of the community and to the local schools for a solution. The question is how can there be a stop to a common thing in the community ?

School Parking Lots

Our goal is to help those who drive to school get to class on time. The traffic coming to school causes students to park in the spaces towards the back of the lot. This leads to an increase in the amount of time it takes them to walk to class and reduces the time they have to go to their lockers. Not only will this help those who are driving, but also the students who get dropped off. Parents and student drivers struggle to get into the parking lot quickly enough because of all the traffic. By opening up the parking lot in the back of our school, students will have more convenient parking spaces. Those who have classes in the back of the school will be able to get to class faster. Parents will have to deal with less student drivers when dropping of their kids in the front of the school. Overall, this will help the flow of traffic and also make the roads safer because drivers won't have to rush as much.

Improvement on Sexual Education

Many students are not well informed on sexual education. If they are informed, most of the time it is incorrect information. There is a lot of teen pregnancies in California. More than the Netherlands, Spain, and France. In order to fix this problem, we want there to be a health review during senior year in the government/ economics class. With this review, we hope to accomplish more understanding about sexual education.

We have a recycling problem at Arroyo. The lack of recycling is attracting seagulls, makes the school appear dirty, and by not recycling Arroyo is missing out on huge profits. If our policy is enforced, it will help fix the current problems and bring in big revenues for our school that will help pay for dances, and other student events. Likewise, we're helping save the environment.

Gender Equality in Schools

Gilbert LC SL JS RA IQ

Have you noticed the amount of unfair treatment towards certain genders in schools? Well, I have and I am prepared to do something about it. It isn't fair for one gender to be treated differently at school, and in general. The dress code is a big deal for reaching a higher standard of gender equality. It is no surprise that girls are treated differently when it comes to the school dress code. They have a lot more rules than the guys and they are enforced more often then the guys rules are. I have only seen guys be told to pull their pants up when they are sagging. They are never told to go home and get a belt and they are never told to go to the office. We all know as soon as the teacher or security guard turns their head the pants will drop right back down to where they were before. They could also be wearing a tank top, which is against the dress code, but no punishments will be enforced. However, when it comes to girls being dressed coded they get sent home for the smallest things. For instance, they are wearing flip flops, or a tank top that covers the entire shoulder but is still considered a tank top. How is a girl going to be sent home for a tank top when a guy isn't. It honestly doesn't make any sense to me. My plan is to get at least teachers and security guards to send guys home for breaking the dress code.

It's not just the dress though. I have noticed that some teachers tend to treat girls better than guys. It is one thing to have a favorite student who is a girl but it is a whole other thing to treat the girls better. I understand that some guys can be pretty idiotic but so can some girls also. It isn't fair for the guys to be treated differently. They are just as human as girls. Teachers should either find a way to be neutral with the class or show favorites to both genders.

Does this contributes largely to ocean pollution?  And for those of you who do not live in the Bay, would you consider Ocean pollution a big problem?
